If you have ever compared two quotes for what looks like the same bottle and found a 15% gap, grade is often the reason.
The short version
304 (18/8) is the workhorse: food-safe, resistant to most drinks, and the right answer for the large majority of programmes. 316L adds molybdenum, which improves resistance to chlorides — salt water, certain cleaning agents, and long exposure in coastal markets.
When 316L earns its cost
Marine and coastal use, salt-heavy sports drinks, and premium positioning where the customer reads the spec sheet. 316L also welds and vacuum-brazes cleanly, which matters for large-format jugs.
What we recommend in practice
Use 304 for mainstream programmes and put the money into a better lid. Offer 316L as an upgrade tier on your top SKU — the perceived value is high and the cost delta is easy to explain.
A note on wall thickness
Wall thickness affects heat retention and dent resistance more than grade does for a typical 500ml bottle. Do not trade thickness for grade.
