How Drinkware Survives Real Use: The Five Failures And Their Tests

The complaints that come back from the field are predictable, and each one traces to a specific stage. Here is where each failure is caught before it ships.

How Drinkware Survives Real Use: The Five Failures And Their Tests

The failures a buyer hears about after a container has shipped are not random. There are five of them, they recur across every market and every price point, and each one traces back to a stage that either ran a check or did not. Knowing which stage answers which complaint is what turns a quality argument into a process question, and a process question has an answer.

The five, and where each is caught

Why the dishwasher is the honest test

A dishwasher cycle combines the three things that age a drinkware finish at once: heat, detergent and abrasion against other items. A coating that survives a wipe with a cloth has been tested for almost nothing. Where a buyer sells into a market where machine washing is routine, the durability question is decided by the finish and the decoration method rather than by the body, and it is worth saying so in the specification rather than discovering it in a review.

The one check a buyer can do themselves

Test the assembled article rather than the body. A bottle that holds water when stood upright tells you nothing about the seal, and the seal is where most leak complaints come from. Fill it, close it as a customer would, and lay it on its side, which is the position it spends most of its life in.

Where decoration sits in this

The method and the durability are the same decision. Anything laid onto the steel in a film sits on top of it, and anything that cuts into the steel or exposes it has nothing to wear off. A buyer who wants a logo that survives years of washing is choosing a method, not a supplier. The laser against screen printing comparison sets out the trade.

Questions buyers ask

What does the inspection actually produce?

Packing and appearance inspected to an agreed AQL plan, with photographs and a written report issued before the goods are released. The report is the artefact, and it is issued against the order number rather than in general.

What happens when something does fail?

There is a procedure rather than a reassurance, and it is the eighth control point: replacement, compensation or rework according to agreed terms and the evidence. Ask what the procedure is before the first order, when the question costs nothing to answer.

How do I write durability into a specification?

Name the finish, name the decoration method, and say how the article will be washed. Those three lines decide the answer to four of the five failures above, and they cost nothing to add to a brief.

The eight checks these failures map onto are published on the quality page, with the detail behind them on the QC checklist. To put a specific finish or method against your intended use, a technical enquiry reaches the people who run the line.

Protecting A Drinkware Design From Being Copied

A body shape is hard to protect and a colourway is almost impossible. What is exclusive is narrower than most buyers assume, and cheaper to secure than they expect.

Where To Cut Cost Without Cutting The Product

Almost every cost reduction that works removes a setup. Almost every one that fails removes material. Here is how to tell them apart before you order.
