Head To Head

Laser Engraving vs Screen Printing

Two ways to put a logo on the same body, and what each one costs you later.

Side By Side

Laser engraving vs Silk screen printing

Read down the rows rather than across the columns: the question is what changes for the buyer, and the two answers to one row are the comparison.
Laser Engraving vs Screen Printing compared
What changesLaser engravingSilk screen printing
How the mark is madeThe laser removes the surface, exposing the steel underneath.Ink is laid on the surface through a mesh screen and cured.
ColourOne tone — whatever the steel does. On a coated body it is a light mark; on bare steel it is darker. One to four spot colours, flat and strong.
DetailFine lines and small text hold well; it cannot do gradients or photographs.Solid shapes and lettering; fine detail is limited by the mesh.
DurabilityPermanent. It cannot peel, chip or fade, because there is nothing applied to peel.Good in normal retail use; it is a coating, so an abrasive life will eventually show it.
Surface it needsAny body, coated or bare — it is the only method that reads on bare steel.A flat or gently curved wall. Complicated shapes need water transfer instead.
Cost structureOne setup for the file. Unit cost is essentially flat against colour count.A setup per colour, so the second and third colour each add a screen.
What it looks like in the handRestrained and premium. It reads as part of the object.Bold and promotional. It reads as branding applied to the object.

Deciding

Two Lists, One Decision

Choose Laser engraving if…

  • One-colour or tone-on-tone branding on a premium or minimal range.
  • The logo has fine detail, small lettering or a fine-line mark.
  • The item will be used hard, washed often, or carried against other objects.
  • The artwork has more than three colours and spot colour is not affordable.

Choose Silk screen printing if…

  • Two to four flat brand colours, and the logo is a solid shape.
  • The item is promotional, and reading at arm's length matters more than longevity.
  • The body wall is flat enough for a screen.
  • The logo is likely to change between runs, so a repeatable screen is not worth archiving.

Asked Before You Order

The Questions This Comparison Raises

Read the long version
Which one should I choose?

The short answer is at the top of this page and the two lists below spell it out: choose Laser engraving when the first three conditions on its list are true, and Silk screen printing when they are true of the other. If neither list reads like your programme, that is a useful answer too — send the requirement and we will say which of the two it actually is rather than sell you the dearer one.

Does the choice change the lead time?

It can. The published windows are samples in 3–7 days and production in 10–25 days after sample approval, and a route that needs a component the plant does not hold, or a material with a narrower mill supply, sits at the longer end of that rather than outside it. It is worth confirming the specific combination rather than assuming the generic window.

Can I have both on one order?

Usually, yes, and it is a sensible way to test the market: a small run of each, judged on the same shelf. What it changes is the minimum, because the minimum applies per colour and per setup rather than per order — so two routes can mean two minimums.

What does it do to the price?

It moves it in a direction this page can name without quoting a number: silk screen printing is the cheaper route unless the programme needs a feature only laser engraving provides. Unit cost is quoted against the body, the decoration, the quantity and the destination, so the honest comparison is between two quotations on the same brief.
