Head To Head

Vacuum Insulated vs Single Wall

What the vacuum actually buys, and when a single wall is the right answer.

Side By Side

Double-wall vacuum vs Single wall

Read down the rows rather than across the columns: the question is what changes for the buyer, and the two answers to one row are the comparison.
Vacuum Insulated vs Single Wall compared
What changesDouble-wall vacuumSingle wall
How it worksTwo walls with the air evacuated between them. With no air to conduct, heat has almost nowhere to go.One wall. The drink equilibrates with the room in minutes.
What it does to the outsideStays at room temperature while the drink is hot, and does not sweat when the drink is cold.Takes the temperature of the contents, and condenses in humid air.
Thermal resultPublished as a family reference range for the references the site prints it for; the commercial figure depends on the body, the lid and the test method, so it is confirmed per order. No insulation claim is made, because there is no insulation.
WeightHeavier for the same capacity — there is a second wall and a vacuum space.Lighter, which is the whole reason some programmes still specify it.
CostThe largest single cost difference in the product, because there are more forming and brazing steps.Materially cheaper per piece.
How you know it workedVacuum retention is tested — every piece, not a sample.Nothing to test. The wall is either formed or it is not.
Where it is the right answerAnywhere the drink is carried, and anywhere the outside of the vessel is held.Give-away volume, cold-drink promotional runs, and products where weight is the constraint.

Deciding

Two Lists, One Decision

Choose Double-wall vacuum if…

  • The buyer will hold the outside of the vessel, hot or cold.
  • The product is carried — commuting, sport, travel, school.
  • Condensation is a problem: on a desk, in a bag, in a car.
  • The thermal claim is part of the retail proposition.

Choose Single wall if…

  • The item is a high-volume give-away where weight and unit cost decide the programme.
  • The drink is served and consumed immediately, so nothing has to be held.
  • The product is a vessel for cold liquid only, in a dry environment.
  • The weight limit in the shipping plan is the binding constraint, not the volume.

Asked Before You Order

The Questions This Comparison Raises

Read the long version
Which one should I choose?

The short answer is at the top of this page and the two lists below spell it out: choose Double-wall vacuum when the first three conditions on its list are true, and Single wall when they are true of the other. If neither list reads like your programme, that is a useful answer too — send the requirement and we will say which of the two it actually is rather than sell you the dearer one.

Does the choice change the lead time?

It can. The published windows are samples in 3–7 days and production in 10–25 days after sample approval, and a route that needs a component the plant does not hold, or a material with a narrower mill supply, sits at the longer end of that rather than outside it. It is worth confirming the specific combination rather than assuming the generic window.

Can I have both on one order?

Usually, yes, and it is a sensible way to test the market: a small run of each, judged on the same shelf. What it changes is the minimum, because the minimum applies per colour and per setup rather than per order — so two routes can mean two minimums.

What does it do to the price?

It moves it in a direction this page can name without quoting a number: single wall is the cheaper route unless the programme needs a feature only double-wall vacuum provides. Unit cost is quoted against the body, the decoration, the quantity and the destination, so the honest comparison is between two quotations on the same brief.
