Head To Head

Retail Packaging vs Plain Export Carton

The pack that sells the product, against the pack that only has to protect it.

Side By Side

Retail packaging vs Plain export carton

Read down the rows rather than across the columns: the question is what changes for the buyer, and the two answers to one row are the comparison.
Retail Packaging vs Plain Export Carton compared
What changesRetail packagingPlain export carton
What it isA printed box, sleeve or wrap made to your artwork, with the barcode placed to your specification.A master carton and nothing else — no printed box, no inner tray, no barcode unless it is asked for.
What it protects againstHandling and shelf wear, and it carries the brand once it is on a shelf.Transit. That is the whole job it is being asked to do.
What it changesThe carton dimensions, because a box occupies volume a bag does not, so the pack-out drops and the freight per piece rises with it.Nothing. The pack-out is the pack-out.
Barcode and marksPart of the decision rather than a later step: placement is specified, and a marketplace or retailer may dictate it.Added only if asked for, and usually applied to the carton rather than the piece.
Handling per pieceHigher — the item is boxed, and often bagged inside the box as well.Lowest. Items go into the carton as they come off the line.
The honest summaryCorrect when the product has to sell itself in a store, and the freight increase is worth modelling before the artwork is drawn.Correct for bulk, distributor and re-packed orders, and it is the baseline every quotation starts from.

Deciding

Two Lists, One Decision

Choose Retail packaging if…

  • The goods go to a shelf, a display or a marketplace fulfilment centre rather than to a warehouse.
  • The pack has to carry the brand because nobody is there to explain the product.
  • The retailer or marketplace specifies the barcode and its placement.
  • The freight increase has been checked against the retail price and still works.

Choose Plain export carton if…

  • The order is bulk or distributor volume and the item is shelved loose or re-packed on arrival.
  • The destination re-packs into its own packaging before the product is seen by anyone.
  • Freight per piece is the binding constraint on the programme.
  • The pack is being decided later, and committing to a box now would fix the carton too early.

Asked Before You Order

The Questions This Comparison Raises

Read the long version
Which one should I choose?

The short answer is at the top of this page and the two lists below spell it out: choose Retail packaging when the first three conditions on its list are true, and Plain export carton when they are true of the other. If neither list reads like your programme, that is a useful answer too — send the requirement and we will say which of the two it actually is rather than sell you the dearer one.

Does the choice change the lead time?

It can. The published windows are samples in 3–7 days and production in 10–25 days after sample approval, and a route that needs a component the plant does not hold, or a material with a narrower mill supply, sits at the longer end of that rather than outside it. It is worth confirming the specific combination rather than assuming the generic window.

Can I have both on one order?

Usually, yes, and it is a sensible way to test the market: a small run of each, judged on the same shelf. What it changes is the minimum, because the minimum applies per colour and per setup rather than per order — so two routes can mean two minimums.

What does it do to the price?

It moves it in a direction this page can name without quoting a number: plain export carton is the cheaper route unless the programme needs a feature only retail packaging provides. Unit cost is quoted against the body, the decoration, the quantity and the destination, so the honest comparison is between two quotations on the same brief.
