A sports bottle is bought on function rather than on finish, and the functions that decide repeat purchase are one-handed opening, grip when wet, and not leaking in a gym bag. An OEM brief that names only capacity and colour leaves all three to chance.
Specify these before anything else
- Opening mechanism. Screw, flip, slide or bite valve — and whether it can be opened with one hand while moving.
- Grip. Whether the body is coated for grip, moulded with a profile, or bare. A bare polished body is the worst case when wet.
- Seal standard. What “leakproof” means for this product, in a test method and a duration.
- Base diameter. Whether it has to fit a cup holder, a bike cage or a bag pocket.
- Capacity against weight. A 1L bottle that cannot be carried comfortably does not get carried.
The seal question, specifically
| Closure | Seals involved | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Screw cap | One gasket | Fewest paths to fail |
| Flip top | Gasket plus the flip seal | Test with the flip closed and shaken |
| Slide straw | Gasket plus the slide seal | Wear over cycles is the risk, not the initial seal |
| Bite valve | Valve plus its housing | Valve material decides performance |
What a factory should be able to answer
Which stages are in-house, whether the vacuum and leak test runs on every piece or a sample, and which lid moulds exist versus which would be new. Those three answers decide the lead time, the minimum and the price more than any negotiating position.
Questions buyers ask
Is a plastic sports bottle better for this?
It is lighter and cheaper, and it does not hold temperature. Sports use is often one or the other rather than both, which is why we run a small food-grade plastic range alongside the vacuum one.
Can the bottle carry a printed team identity?
Yes, and it is the usual decoration for this category. Multi-colour artwork usually means a transfer rather than a screen.
Do I need different packaging for sport?
Usually a hang tag or a simple wrap rather than a full retail box, because the display is a rack rather than a shelf.
Tell us the mechanism and the seal standard and we will tell you which mould is closest — a tooling enquiry is the fastest route.
