Packaging

Packaging & Secondary Pack

Box formats, set configurations, and the rule that decides how a multi-colour launch is counted against its minimum.

Not sure which of these applies? Start from the whole range

The Decision

Packaging Is Specified, Not Chosen From A Shelf

Packaging is the first thing a buyer sees and the last thing specified. It carries the barcode, the destination label and the master carton count, so it is decided against the logistics rather than against the photography. It is also where a multi-colour launch quietly gets expensive, because the minimum is counted per colour.

Box Formats

The Formats We Run

A box format is chosen against the logistics rather than against the photography, so what follows is the list a programme is specified from rather than a style gallery. The photograph is the packing bench, because that is the part of the format we can actually show you honestly.
FormatWhat it isWhere it earns its place
Brown boxThe unbleached kraft carton, printed or plain.Cost per unit, and the right default when the product is the thing being looked at.
White boxThe bleached white carton, printed or plain.A neutral ground that takes colour accurately, for ranges where the colour is the message.
Colour boxA full-colour printed carton. When the packaging has to carry the brand rather than frame the product.
Window boxA carton with a cut window so the product shows through.Retail shelf, where the buyer needs to see the colour they are matching to the label.
Display boxA headed or shaped display carton for a counter or a shelf.A launch, a counter, or a range that has to stand up on its own.
PVC boxA clear rigid presentation box.A gift or a limited run, where the presentation is the point.
Round boxA round-section carton for round bodies.Tumbler formats, where a rectangular carton is either wasteful or a crush risk.
Egg-crate / divider trayA partitioned inner tray that separates the pieces.Multi-piece sets, where the pieces touch in transit and must not mark each other.

The format list above is deliberately a table and not a gallery of box photographs, which is worth saying once. The media library holds eight box frames and every one of them fails on inspection: one is a portrait sheet of another supplier's products, two carry that supplier's own PACKAGING lettering, two print a LOGO placeholder in the frame, and the clearest one is a twelve-carton sheet on which three cartons are somebody else's branded packaging. A page of box photographs is exactly what this library was curated to avoid, so the formats are named here and the picture on this page is the packing bench they actually go to.

Master carton quantities, pallet loads and carton dimensions are quoted per programme rather than listed here, because they follow the body size and the destination's pallet rules — both of which are decisions, not catalogue entries.

Sets

Multi-Piece Set Configurations

Two-Piece

One sellable unit

Two-Piece

One sellable unit

Bottle plus lid. Nothing structural changes — it is a packing decision, and it keeps the lid with the body through transit.

Three-Piece

Adds an accessory to the count

Three-Piece

Adds an accessory to the count

Typically bottle, lid and a drinkware accessory — and the accessory has to clear its own minimum.

Five-Piece

Each colour counted separately

Five-Piece

Each colour counted separately

A larger assembly of drinkware pieces. Every distinct colour in the set counts against the minimum on its own.

Seven-Piece

One carton, not several

Seven-Piece

One carton, not several

The full boxed programme, divided rather than stacked. It needs a partitioned tray and has to be planned as a single carton.

The published minimum rule is the one that governs sets: a mixed set can be assembled from several colours or models as long as each one reaches its own minimum. A five-piece set in four colours is four counts, not one.

The Rule

How A Multi-Colour Launch Is Counted

SituationHow it is counted
One body, one colour, several finishesOne count. The finish does not start a new minimum.
One body, two body coloursTwo counts. Body colour is counted per colour, per model.
One body colour, two lid coloursTwo counts. Lid colour starts a new count exactly as body colour does.
Two models in one programmeCounted per model as well as per colour, so the models are counted separately.
A set with an accessory in another colourEach colour in the set is its own count.

If your launch plan sits below the minimum, say the quantity you are actually working to. We will tell you whether a smaller trial run is possible on that tooling before you commit to a colour range — which is a far better conversation than discovering it at the quotation.

Questions

Packaging Questions

The four that decide how a launch is costed.
Does packaging affect my minimum order quantity?

Indirectly, and it is the count rather than the carton that matters. The minimum runs per colour per model, and a set with several colours in it is counted as several counts. Packaging format itself does not start a new count.

Can I see the packaging before production?

Yes, and you should. Carton artwork is proofed the same way a decorated sample is, because a print that reads well on a bottle can read badly on a kraft carton. Send your artwork and it is proofed against the actual carton stock.

What about pallet loading and master cartons?

Quoted per programme rather than listed, because both follow the body size and the destination's pallet rules. Tell us the destination up front and both come back with the quotation.

Do you supply fitted inserts and dividers?

Yes — a partitioned inner tray is standard for multi-piece sets, and it is what stops the pieces marking each other in transit. The set is planned as one carton rather than several.
